Use our handy monthly calendar to schedule these simple maintenance tips to make your garden look its best.

Better Garden Tips

  • Take cuttings of annuals such as Coleus, geraniums, Pentas, double Petunias and Thunbergia for use as winter houseplants.
  • Plant hyacinth and daffodil bulbs in early to mid-autumn.
  • Gather leaves for composting. Mix green and dry materials and alternate with thin layers of soil or compost for more rapid decomposition. Don’t forget to water and mix between layers.
  • Keep deadheading garden flowers so plants won’t look messy or waste energy making seeds.
  • Dig, dry and store tender bulbs such as Gladiolus, Dahlias, tuberous Begonias and Caladium.
  • Plant lily bulbs as soon as you receive them. Mulch to prevent soil heaving over winter.
